Fairfield Beautification Commission’s Weed Team: A Community Effort to Keep Downtown Looking Its Best

posted on 8/21/25

If you have strolled through downtown Fairfield this summer you have probably noticed how fresh and clean our sidewalks, alleys, and intersections are looking. That is no accident. It is the result of the Fairfield Beautification Commission’s Downtown Weed Team Project, powered by passionate volunteers who put in hundreds of hours to give our downtown a facelift.

📹 Watch the video recap here, beautifully put together by Fairfield resident, entrepreneur, and volunteer Bob Ferguson.

A Summer of Hard Work

The first phase of the project is wrapping up, and it has been no small task. Together, volunteers have logged over 200 hours of scraping, digging, hauling, and sweeping. Beyond pulling weeds, the team estimates that they removed more than three tons of sand and dirt from gutters. That is no easy feat in the summer heat.

The result is a cleaner, more welcoming downtown that we can all take pride in.

Meet Bob Ferguson: Volunteer Extraordinaire

Many of you may have already spotted Bob around town this summer, easily recognized in his bright yellow vest. He has been out there in the heat, sometimes early in the morning, sometimes late into the evening, enthusiastically weeding and rallying others to join the cause. On top of lending his own sweat and effort, Bob created the video to showcase the progress and inspire more community involvement.

What is Next for the Weed Team?

The goal moving forward is simple but impactful.

  • Keep the nine blocks of downtown Fairfield free of weeds.
  • Sweep intersections each Saturday morning.
  • Stay on top of new weeds before they take root.

Volunteers meet every Saturday at 8 AM, or later if that is when you can make it. You will find the team somewhere around the square, ready to work together to keep Fairfield beautiful.

How You Can Help

Community beautification only works when the community comes together. Whether you can give an hour a month or show up every weekend, every bit helps. Grab some gloves, bring a friend, and join the Weed Team.

A huge thank you to the Fairfield Beautification Commission, Bob Ferguson, and all the volunteers who have poured their time and energy into making downtown a place we can all be proud of.
