FAIRFIELD, Iowa—Jefferson County Ciderworks' unique New American ciders were honored in the recent Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition (GLINTCAP), the largest such event in the world. Medals were awarded to six of the company’s different ciders, including a gold medal in the spiced cider category for Ciderworks' flagship Hibiscus Rose.
Hibiscus Rose is made with nothing but hibiscus leaves, whole rosehips, rose water, and apples. Semi-dry cider with earthy tannins and bright, floral flavors, Hibiscus Rose is emblematic of cidermaker Jesse Narducci’s approach. “We like to use ingredients to enhance the qualities of the cider itself, and marry those flavors with the apples in a way that makes something exciting and delicious to drink,” he said. “It’s a real honor that our Rose Cider was given this top award.” With summertime here—and rosé season upon on—Hibiscus Rose offers an alternative that both wine and beer drinkers love. It has the tartness and satisfying blush of rosé, with the dry, slightly fizzy finish of a summer-sipper beverage. Other Ciderworks honorees include Lemon-Lavender cider, a bronze medal winner in GLINTCAP’s speciality cider category. The award-winning ciders are currently available in four packs of sixteen-ounce cans from retailers across Iowa, including numerous Hy-Vee locations. Lemon-Lavender is one of the first special release flavors featured in Ciderworks’ new line of canned ciders, which debuted earlier this year. Tropical Pineapple is also currently available as a seasonal selection. The GLINTCAP honors are the latest in a string of awards for Jefferson County Ciderworks, which was named 2018 Cider Establishment of the Year for the Midwest region during CiderCon, the annual conference hosted by the US Association of Cider Makers.
