What Is NAD+, and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
If you follow health and wellness news, there's a good chance you've started hearing about something called NAD+. It has become a popular topic in conversations about energy, longevity, and healthy aging, and with all the attention it's getting lately, it would be easy to assume it's a relatively new discovery.
What surprised me is that the story of NAD+ actually began 120 years ago.
In 1906, British scientists Arthur Harden and William John Young were studying how yeast ferments sugar. They discovered that fermentation required more than the enzymes scientists already knew about. There was another heat-stable substance involved that helped those enzymes do their work. They didn't yet know exactly what they had discovered, but that mysterious substance would eventually become part of what we now know as NAD+.
Over the following decades, other scientists continued putting the pieces together. Hans von Euler-Chelpin helped identify the chemical nature of this substance, and Otto Warburg later helped establish its important role in oxidation-reduction reactions, the processes our cells use to transfer energy. What started as an experiment involving yeast and sugar eventually helped scientists understand one of the fundamental molecules involved in cellular metabolism. More than a century later, we're still studying it.
So, What Exactly Is NAD+?
NAD+ stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. That's a mouthful, which is probably why everyone sticks with NAD+.
In simple terms, NAD+ is a coenzyme found in our cells. It plays an essential role in helping our bodies convert the nutrients we eat into usable cellular energy. It is also involved in a number of other important cellular processes, which is one reason scientists have continued studying it for so many years.
Think about everything your body asks your cells to do over the course of a day. Your heart beats, your muscles contract, your brain processes information, and your body constantly maintains and repairs itself. Behind all of that is an enormous amount of cellular activity, and NAD+ is one of the molecules involved in keeping many of those processes working.
This is where the healthy-aging conversation becomes particularly interesting.
Researchers have found that NAD+ metabolism changes as we get older, and there is considerable scientific interest in understanding what those changes mean for energy metabolism and other aspects of aging. That's part of the reason NAD+ has moved from something discussed primarily in research laboratories to a subject we're hearing much more about in the broader wellness world.
Where Does NMN Come Into the Picture?
Our bodies don't simply have a permanent supply of NAD+. We continually make and recycle it using different building blocks. One of those building blocks is NMN, or nicotinamide mononucleotide.
NMN is what's known as an NAD+ precursor. In other words, it's one of the compounds the body can use in the process of making NAD+. Researchers have become increasingly interested in NAD+ precursors, including NMN, as they continue investigating NAD+ metabolism and what role supporting those pathways might eventually have in human health and aging.
There's still a great deal to learn. Healthy-aging research is moving quickly, but I think it's important to distinguish between promising science and claims that have actually been proven in people. I don't believe we need to turn every interesting discovery into a miracle cure to appreciate how fascinating the science itself can be.
For me, the interesting part is that we're learning more about what is happening inside our cells as we age and, in turn, asking better questions about how nutrition and lifestyle might support those processes.
Why This Caught My Attention
This subject became particularly timely for me after returning from Shaklee's annual conference. One of the new products introduced this year was Vivix+, which includes NMN as part of its NAD+ Boost Complex.
I've been familiar with the healthy-aging conversation for a long time, but learning more about NAD+ and the history behind it gave me a much better understanding of why there is so much interest in this area right now.

As interesting as NAD+ research is, I don't think any conversation about healthy aging should leave you believing that one molecule, one supplement, or one new discovery replaces the fundamentals.
Everything I've shared over the past several months still matters. Maintaining muscle matters. Getting enough protein matters. Moving regularly, sleeping well, managing stress, eating a nutritious diet, and staying connected all matter.
A supplement should support those habits, not replace them.
That's probably one of the biggest lessons I've learned from following health and wellness over the years. Science continues to give us new tools and a better understanding of how the body works, but the basics have a remarkable way of remaining important.
Final Thought
I find it fascinating that a discovery made while studying yeast fermentation in 1906 has become part of one of today's biggest conversations about healthy aging.
Scientists couldn't have known then where their discovery would lead. Even today, there are still questions to answer about NAD+, NMN, and how these pathways might be used to support human health as we age.
That's part of what makes science interesting. We keep learning.
For me, the goal isn't to chase every new longevity trend that comes along. It's to understand what's behind the conversation, pay attention to good research, and use that information alongside the healthy habits we already know make a difference.
Sometimes, as NAD+ reminds us, the "new" science everyone is talking about has actually been more than a century in the making.
