The Fairfield Art Association announces an Exhibit Opening titled "40 Year Journey" by the artist Michael Canas. This Main Gallery show in the FA&CC, begins on Friday May 2, from 6-9 PM and includes works in oil, watercolor, and pastel.  At 7:00 PM the artist will demonstrate oil painting of a still life.

The artist states "I believe in working with what I know. Small towns and rural fields have been a major part of that experience. These have long been a recurring theme which I draw upon to lend a sense of nostalgia work. Whereas I have consciously reached out to the viewer through images which touch upon shared memories, more recent work sees this expressed on a more personal level. While current work remains similar, choice of subject matter is more a vehicle for exploring the process of painting itself. I approach painting with a heightened awareness of shapes, values, marks, etc., as opposed to the subject matter. Abstraction becomes a means by which to achieve another level of realism. Recent works originate increasingly from direct observation such as plein air and small still life set ups. This seems to coincide with my increasing admiration of and influence by Post Impressionists such as French artists Edouard Vuillard and Henri Le Sidaner, as well as American artists Childe Hassam, Frederick Frieseke and Edward Hopper".
