“The Earth Speaks” Exhibit by Monica Basile Coming to Fairfield

posted on 9/17/26

The Fairfield Art Association will welcome Iowa City artist Monica Basile and her new exhibit, The Earth Speaks, to the Main Gallery at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center beginning Friday, October 2.

The community is invited to meet Basile during an opening reception from 6–8:30pm. At 7pm, the artist will give a special presentation featuring brief readings that bring her artwork to life.

The exhibit features fine-line ink engravings on clayboard created as part of a year-long meditation on Basile’s spiritual connections with nature. The project culminated in a deck of oracle cards also titled The Earth Speaks.

Each illustration represents a natural phenomenon or seasonal milestone and serves as an invitation to reflect on the medicinal messages of these moments. Through the collection, Basile encourages viewers to approach their lived experiences with greater understanding, compassion, and reverence.

Basile studied printmaking and book arts at the University of Nebraska Omaha before completing her doctorate in gender, women’s and sexuality studies at the University of Iowa. Weaving together visual and healing arts practices grounded in a deep reverence for nature’s rhythms and the body’s wisdom, her work invites people to experience beauty, enchantment, and connection to the earth as pathways to peace.

The opening reception is free and open to the public at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, 200 N. Main St. in Fairfield.
