Small Feet, BIG Hearts: Pence Fourth Graders Organize Sock-Tober Drive
A classroom video has sparked a community service project for Karen Wulf’s fourth graders at Pence Elementary. After watching an inspiring Kid President video, the students decided to organize a Sock-Tober sock drive to help individuals experiencing homelessness.
The class is collecting new socks in all sizes, with donation boxes available at Pence Elementary and Washington State Bank.
According to Wulf, learning that socks are among the most-needed items for people experiencing homelessness motivated the students to get involved. They created posters, decorated donation boxes and organized their own collection effort, putting a lesson about kindness into practice.

The project connects the class with Socktober, an effort that encourages people to collect new socks for those in need. For Wulf’s students, it also offers a hands-on opportunity to recognize a need, work together and invite others to help.
Their “Small Feet, BIG Hearts” message reflects the idea behind the project: children can make a difference in their communities, and a simple donation can help meet someone’s everyday needs.
Community members can support the students’ work by dropping off a pair—or a package—of new socks at either collection location. Every pair adds to the kindness these fourth graders are working to share.
