MIU Men’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw at St. Francis in Second Regular-Season Match
After a long drive from Fairfield, Iowa, the Pioneers stepped onto the field against a high-intensity St. Francis squad and quickly settled into the physical contest.
St. Francis created the first significant chances of the match, but MIU goalkeeper Juan Jose was there to keep the Pioneers within reach early. MIU also generated opportunities of its own, with Jayden Hulley testing the St. Francis defense twice in the opening 25 minutes.
The hosts eventually broke through in the 33rd minute when Jack Browne finished a pass from Ted Barker to give St. Francis a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers responded eight minutes later. Jesse Cano delivered the assist to Estevao Goncalves, who found the back of the net in the 41st minute to bring the match level at 1-1. The goal marked Goncalves' third of the season through MIU's first two regular-season contests.
"First of all, I want to thank God for the goal. It was a hard-fought match. Playing away from home is never easy, but I believe we did a great job despite the draw," Goncalves said. "Now it's time to focus on the next match and bring another victory home."
The Pioneers carried the momentum into halftime tied with the hosts.
The second half became a battle of defensive composure and goalkeeping. MIU created chances through Francesco Puch, Goncalves and Deondre Richards, while St. Francis continued to apply pressure in the attacking third.
With the match remaining level, Dylan Stott stepped into goal for the Pioneers and delivered a standout second-half performance. Stott made multiple crucial saves, including a sequence in the 74th minute in which he stopped three consecutive St. Francis shots within seconds of one another.
Stott continued to answer the challenge late in the match, making another save in the 86th minute to preserve the 1-1 scoreline.
"I thought it was a great game. Both teams came into it strong looking for a result. We won the battles we needed to, and our effort and intensity was outstanding the whole game," Stott said. "I thought we put up a very, very good fight against a strong opposition. A few things need ironing out; however, overall, a very solid performance from the team and something everyone should be proud of."
Associate Head Coach Caio Pereira praised the team's performance and its ability to maintain its identity throughout a demanding road contest.
"Our team played a fantastic game against a very high-intensity opponent and in front of their home crowd. We maintained our identity throughout the entire game," Pereira said. "I'm very happy with the shift the guys put on today."
The Pioneers secured a hard-earned result on the road against St. Francis as they continue their inaugural USCAA season.
MIU will return to action on Sunday, August 30, at 2:30 p.m. when the Pioneers travel to Briar Cliff University for their next regular-season contest.
