Jefferson County Historic Preservation Commission Launches Major Fundraising Campaign to Restore Iowa’s Oldest Two-Story Log House

posted on 6/19/25

The Jefferson County Historic Preservation Commission is proud to announce the launch of a community-wide fundraising campaign to restore one of Iowa’s most treasured historical landmarks, the Bonnifield Log House/Cabin. Nestled in Old Settlers Park/Waterworks Park in Fairfield, this two-story log home is the oldest of its kind in the state and a striking symbol of Iowa’s early pioneer spirit.

The goal: raise $325,000 by September 30, 2026.

“Our mission is to preserve and restore this rare piece of local history so future generations can experience the roots of Jefferson County firsthand,” said Joan Salts, Chairperson of the Commission. “With community support, we believe we can bring the Bonnifield Log House back to life.”

In appreciation of donations, the commission is offering personalized donor bricks, which can be inscribed to honor individuals, families, businesses, military service, or memorials. These bricks will become a permanent part of the restored site and are available in multiple sizes with various inscription options.

Donations can be made online via www.bricksrus.com/donorsite/JeffersonCHPC, or through Venmo (@BonnifieldCabin), PayPal (@BonnifieldProject), or by mailing a check payable to JCHPC/Bonnifield Cabin.

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, all contributions are tax-deductible.
