Jefferson County Conservation Offers October Programs for Nature Lovers of All Ages
Birdwatching, hands-on projects and fall exploration are on the calendar this October at Jefferson County Conservation. The month’s programs offer opportunities for families, homeschool students and outdoor enthusiasts to learn something new and enjoy the season close to home.

Birdy Brunch: Monday, October 5, 10 AM–Noon
October’s Birdy Brunch continues a series exploring past ornithologists and their contributions to birding. This month’s discussion focuses on Alexander Wilson and the three bird species found in Iowa that bear his name.
Following the presentation, participants will head outside for a birding walk.

Hunter Education Course: Saturday, October 10, 8 AM–4 PM
Jefferson County Conservation will host a classroom hunter education course covering firearm and archery safety, hunting laws, wildlife identification, survival skills, first aid and outdoor ethics.
Participants should bring a sack lunch and something to drink and dress for the weather, as part of the course will take place outdoors. Registration is available through Go Outdoors Iowa.

Homeschool Adventures: Friday, October 23, 10:30 AM–12:30 PM
Homeschool students can explore some of nature’s spooky side just in time for Halloween. Part of an ongoing program encouraging students to get outside throughout the year, October’s session will focus on spooky things found in the natural world.

Woodworking for Wildlife: Friday, October 23, 5–6:30 PM
Build something useful for backyard birds during this hands-on workshop. Participants will assemble a platform bird feeder with a design that can also be adapted into a hopper-style feeder.
All materials will be provided, with pieces pre-cut and labeled to make construction easier. Participants may take their completed feeder home or leave it at the park to support wildlife viewing.
The cost is $20 per feeder, and online registration is required. Register for Woodworking for Wildlife.

Fall Trail Drive: Saturday, October 24, 11 AM–2 PM
Bring the family to enjoy a portion of the Fairfield Loop Trail during the annual Fall Trail Drive.
This year’s drive will begin at the Cedar View Trailhead off South 32nd Street. Participants can continue straight along Cedar View Trail, across the bridges and out, or take the route down the hill to the left, ending at the Maasdam Barns near the hospital.

Toddler Time: Friday, October 30, 10–11 AM
Young children and their accompanying adults can explore nature through their five senses during October’s Toddler Time.
The program begins with a short introduction before participants head out for a hike to discover how their senses help them experience the outdoors. Toddler Time is designed for children ages 2–4, and each child must be accompanied by an adult.

Get Involved as a Volunteer
Jefferson County Conservation is also updating its volunteer contact list. Past volunteers and anyone interested in helping with future activities are encouraged to complete the volunteer form shared in its October newsletter. Joining the general volunteer list allows participants to receive notices about upcoming opportunities.
