IRS Individual Online Accounts: An easy tool for taxpayers

posted on 2/27/26

The IRS continues to take steps towards transforming the taxpayer experience in several ways. All taxpayers are encouraged to create an IRS Individual Online Account. While this is not a new tool, users are able to access their tax account information securely online and to help protect against identity theft and fraud.

Anyone who can verify their identity may create an account. Once established, it’s important that the taxpayer be the only one to log into their account. Log in information should never be shared with others.

Benefits of an Individual Online Account:

  • View key tax return information, such as their adjusted gross income
  • Request an identity protection PIN and access it throughout the year
  • Check the status of their refund
  • Confirm the status of their amended return
  • Get account transcripts, including wage and income records
  • Approve power of attorney and tax information authorization requests
  • Edit language preferences and request alternative media
  • Receive and view over 200 IRS digital notices
  • Make and cancel payments
  • Set up or modify payment plans and check their balance

Types of tax documents available for viewing and downloading:

  • Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement
  • Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement
  • Form 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation
  • Form 1099-DIV, Dividends and Distributions
  • Form 1099-INT, Interest Income
  • Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Information

With a focus on improving the taxpayer experience and supporting timely filing, wage and income transcripts for 2025 are now available on IOLA - weeks ahead of the typical late-March timeframe. These transcripts are especially helpful for taxpayers who have moved, changed jobs or misplaced their documents.

In some cases, a transcript may not populate and a message of “No record of return filed” may show. This is because the IRS has not received the data from the employer.
