Iowa National Guard Builds Stronger Connections in Fairfield

posted on 7/20/26

The Iowa National Guard has a growing presence in Fairfield, and a recent episode of Chamber Talk offered a closer look at what that means for the community.

Major Wallway and Captain G joined the conversation to discuss the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, whose headquarters relocated from Des Moines to Fairfield about a year ago. Since then, the team has been settling into the local armory, renovating its space and strengthening its connection to southeast Iowa.

During the interview, they explain the battalion’s role in logistics, from transportation and maintenance to water purification, fuel operations and other support capabilities. They also share how those same skills and resources can play an important role closer to home when the National Guard responds to floods, tornadoes and other emergencies.

The conversation also explores their individual paths into military service, the variety of careers available through the Guard and how Guard members balance military service with civilian careers, education and community life.

With the largest battalion in the Iowa National Guard now headquartered right here in Fairfield, there is plenty more to learn about the people, skills and resources behind it.
