Iowa Households Can Prepare to Apply for Winter Heating Assistance

As colder weather approaches, Iowa households that may need help with heating costs can prepare for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP.

LIHEAP helps qualifying households pay a portion of their residential heating costs. Both homeowners and renters may apply. The program provides supplemental help; it is not intended to pay a household’s entire energy bill.

Iowa begins accepting applications October 1 from households with a member who is at least 60 years old or has a disability. Other households may apply beginning November 1. Applications are accepted through April 30 on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to eligibility. Because the state page currently displays income figures for the program year ending September 30, readers should check the current guidelines when they apply. Health & Human Services

In Jefferson County, Sieda Community Action helps residents apply for energy assistance. Sieda provides information about required documents, application options and its local resource centers. Residents can also request that an application be mailed to them by contacting Sieda.
