Hunter Education Course Coming to Jefferson County Park October 10

posted on 10/1/26

Jefferson County Conservation will host a Hunter Education Course on Saturday, October 10, from 8 AM to 4 PM at the Jefferson County Park Nature Center, 2003 Libertyville Road in Fairfield. The classroom course offers an opportunity to build the knowledge and skills needed for safe, responsible hunting.

Safety, Skills and Responsibility

The course covers firearm and archery safety, hunting laws, wildlife identification and the basics of wildlife management. Students will also learn about basic survival, first aid and water safety—skills that can be useful across many outdoor activities.

Individual responsibility and outdoor ethics are central to the program, helping participants understand their role in protecting themselves, others and Iowa’s natural resources.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, people born after January 1, 1972, generally must complete hunter education before purchasing an Iowa hunting license, with exceptions for certain youth hunting situations. Students may enroll beginning at age 11; a certificate earned at that age becomes valid on the student’s 12th birthday.

Register Using the Student’s Account

Register for the October 10 Hunter Education Course through Go Outdoors Iowa.

Parents registering a child should log in using the child’s Iowa DNR account or create an account for that child. Parents should register under their own account only if they also intend to take the course for certification.

Students who have previously purchased Iowa DNR licenses, including youth deer tags, should already have an account and should use their own personal information when registering.

What to Bring

Participants should bring a sack lunch and something to drink. Dress appropriately for the weather, as a portion of the class will take place outside.
