In OBSERVER, filmmaker Ian Cheney embarks on an experiment in which he brings a series of keen-eyed observers – scientists, artists, a hunter – to a range of locations around the world, often without telling them where they are going, and asks them simply to describe what they see.
What unfolds is a deep exploration and celebration of the power of observation: what happens when you find new ways to sense and perceive the world around you? With customary whimsy and a small painted red square that Cheney brings on every journey, the film is an invitation to viewers to find beauty and meaning in even the most quotidian of locales.

Join Naturalist, Austin Roe, for a quick lesson on slow birding activities you can do to stay engaged throughout the summer. Then join in on a slow birding exercise. We’ll be trying a big sit activity where we’ll try to stay in the same place and see as many birds as we can from that point. This will help us to notice more details and behaviors of the birds we are observing. Bringing your own binoculars is recommended, but we do have limited pairs to borrow if needed. Also, bring any sketchbooks or notebooks you might like to utilize for the big sit activity.

Our Market at a Glance
First organized in 1975, we have become SE Iowa’s most well known farmer’s market. Customers are always pleased, and vendors can’t wait to bring their goods to such a vibrant community of buyers.
The market is intended to provide an opportunity for individuals to sell approved items, which are produced or manufactured by them in their garden, farm or home. Vendors may sell only those products that are approved items and that are grown or made by them.
We are organized as a 501c3 non-profit and manged by a Market Advisory Board. We have expanded to accept vendors from all surounded counties, plus three more counties.
Friendly Local Merchants
All of our vendors are friendly and helpful.
Feel free to talk with them when you visit our market.

Photography Exhibit: 'Fairfield Iconic' by Guy Harvey

June 6, 2025
6:00 pm · 9:00 pm
The Fairfield Art Association announces a new exhibit, Fairfield Iconic, by photographer Guy Harvey. The exhibit of 20 photographic prints will take place in the Hallway Gallery in the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center, opening on Friday, June 6th, from 6 to 9 PM.
Harvey says, “Fairfield Iconic is a series of photographs taken in the downtown area of Fairfield, Iowa, between the years of 2008 and 2023. Each image communicates a sense of place that once served or still serves community life. The images also have an abstract expression of color, shape, and form that has its interest regardless of the identity of the object. I created the images initially for their abstraction and, in particular, their color, but over time the idea of documenting a sense of place became stronger. I have always been attracted to color photography, inspired by the early masters like Ernst Haas and Saul Leiter, who demonstrated the beauty of vivid color in urban settings.”
The exhibit will be showing through June and July.

- You'll help create delicious, plant-based meals for all, regardless of their ability to pay.
- Your efforts support our mission to reduce food waste by working with local food systems.

2025 Classic 96 Live on the Square Concert Series; David Zollo
East Burlington and North Main StreetFairfield, IA

June 28, 2025
7:00 pm · 9:00 pm
Below is the schedule for the 21st year of Fairfield's Live on the Square. This year we will have a diverse lineup of 6 artists, starting June 28th and running through September 13th. All shows start at 7, and are made possible through the generosity of The City of Fairfield, Classic 96, Visitfairfield.com, Libertyville Savings Bank and C1st Credit Union.
6/28/25 - DAVID ZOLLO
Since bursting onto the midwestern music scene with the band High and Lonesome in 1992, David Zollo has had a busy career. Along with touring, in the U.S and Europe, with High and Lonesome and his current band, The Body Electric, Zollo has recorded 7 records of his own material, including the most recent, 2015's "For Hire."
In addition, he founded and operated the seminal, Iowa-based, roots music label, Trailer Records, and recorded the music of Bo Ramsey; Joe and Vicki Price; Greg Brown; The Pines; as well as his own work. Despite the many things Zollo has done during his career, it is as a live performer that many feel he's at his best.
7/19/25 - Jordan Messerole
From the depths of his Iowa roots, multi-award winning songwriter Jordan Messerole writes songs that vary as greatly as the wild flowers in the native tall grass. Messerole does frequently write about that flora, as well as the fauna of the region. Not to mention all of its wild life. Not one to shy away from subject matter, the songs can frequently meander across the lines between love and loss, success and failure, or life and death. Messerole masterfully blends the sounds of his guitars with thoughtful lyrics, an engaging stage presence, and often rack harmonica to tell gritty American tales that are bound to evoke emotion from all of his listeners
8/2/25 Brian Johannesen with special guest Steve McClain
Brian Johannesen is an Iowa City singer-songwriter in the vein of John Prine, Guy Clark, and Steve Earle. Through a fingerpicking guitar style and a gritty, well-traveled voice, Johannesen writes songs that carry equal parts comedy and gravity. He brings a style to the long Americana tradition that is uniquely his own. Helping get the evening started will be Fairfield’s own music
laureate Steve McLain.
8/23/25 The Hi Council
The Hi Council is an alternative/grunge rock band that also plays a few country and pop songs in their creative style. With an evening of originals and amazing covers,The Hi Council consists of singer (Tugg Hill), guitarist (Riley Brown), bassist (Carter Spalla), and drummer (Chase Copeland), Live on the Square is very excited to have The Hi Council joining us in Central Park.
9/12 Drive-Ins 50’s and 60’s Rock and Roll Duo
Get ready to go back in time with the amazing Drive-Ins 50’s and 60’s Rock and Roll Duo. Performing HITS from Roy Orbison, Beach Boys, Eddie Cochran, The Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Ricky Nelson, Chuck Berry, and more…. The Drive-Ins have made a name for themselves across eastern Iowa as a good time summer band. With The Drive-Ins, you can expect an energetic, engaging evening with memories, dancing and more… even while you're doing the Twist!!!
9/13/25 The Beaker Brothers
For over 15 years the Beaker Brothers Band has been paying homage to the original Jam Bands of the late 60’s and early 70’s – the Allman Brothers, Clapton, Santana, Little Feat, Rolling Stones, James Gang, the Doors, Steely Dan, Neil Young, CCR, and many more. The Beaker Brothers Band isn’t a nostalgia act or a tribute show, they play music that has been in our heads and our hearts since we first heard it. This is the music we played in our youth. And we’re as awed by it today as then. We’re thrilled that we’re not alone.
