The City of Fairfield is proud of its industrial heritage, which has been developed and nurtured by its community leaders for more than the past 150 years. Today we have more than a dozen manufacturing plants producing everything from washing machines to brooms and from hay-handling equipment to gloves.
Fairfield is equally proud of the entrepreneurial spirit which is taking us into the 21st century. We're proud of our dozens of service businesses, including a company that is an established leader in graduation photography, a company specializing in book fairs, a leading infomercial production company and several computer software developers. The Fairfield Community School District strives to develop positive student attitudes toward learning. The high-quality teaching professionals from around the nation have done an excellent job in meeting the challenges of providing quality education to our young people.
In 1973, Maharishi Interrnational University, now known as Maharishi University of Management, opened on the old campus of Parsons College. The campus covers 262 acres in Fairfield, is accredited at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels by the North Central Assocation of Colleges and Schools, and provides the highest caliber of higher education to its diverse international student body.
Community and Cultural events are held throughout the year. Band concerts are held in central park during the summer. The Fairfield Concert Association holds concerts throughout the year. Fairfield has a very active Art Association and also a large number of resident artists. Theatre productions are put on several times during the year.
The Fairfield Arts & Convention Center is Iowa's most prestigious musical theatre and convention complex, positioned across from the historic Jefferson County Courthouse and one block north of Fairfield’s beautiful Central Park. Located in the heart of downtown, it enriches the lives of all its patrons. The product of a life-long dream of many of Fairfield’s citizens, and championed by two outstanding members of art & cultural community, Suzan Bates Kessel and Sally Neff Denney, the Center opened its doors on October 1, 2007.
