Missed the Lunch & Learn? Here Are the Seven Secrets to a Great First Impression
If you missed the Fairfield Beautification Commission’s recent Lunch & Learn at Indian Hills Community College, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. The presentation, “Keeping Fairfield Beautiful: The Seven Secrets to a Great First Impression,” shared simple but powerful ways that every business and community member can help make Fairfield shine.
It all begins with the basics: keeping weeds under control. Instead of reaching for harsh chemicals, there’s a safe, eco-friendly recipe made with just Epsom salt, vinegar, and a dash of dish soap. Pair that with regular sweeping, sometimes a broom does the job better than a leaf blower, and sidewalks instantly look more inviting.
But beauty isn’t just about clean pavement. Flowers in bloom bring energy and joy to our streets, and something as small as a colorful welcome mat can brighten a doorway and set the tone for a visitor’s experience.
The Commission also highlighted the importance of reducing litter through cigarette waste receptacles. Businesses can even take part in TerraCycle’s Cigarette Waste Free Recycling Program, which allows collected cigarette butts to be recycled at no cost. It’s a small change with a big impact.
Creativity has its place too. Each year, the Rose Award for Excellence in Window Display recognizes businesses that go above and beyond in creating imaginative storefronts. A great display tells a story, reflects the season or brand, and uses light, color, and design to connect with people walking by. It’s not just decoration, it’s community spirit on display.
Finally, keep an eye out for upcoming tips on signage dos and don’ts. Good signage is one of the simplest ways to make a strong first impression, and the Commission will soon be sharing best practices.
The takeaway? Keeping Fairfield beautiful isn’t the job of one group, it’s something we all contribute to. From sweeping our sidewalks to planting flowers, putting thought into our storefronts, and recycling cigarette waste, each effort adds up. And together, they make Fairfield a place that residents are proud to call home and visitors are excited to discover.
