Lastly, SSA also understands that getting medical and other documentation can be difficult due to the pandemic. So, they are continuing to extend certain deadlines wherever possible. . DES MOINES – Iowa Workforce Development announced an increase to the amount of maximum weekly benefits paid to unemployed Iowans and to workers injured on the job. The new benefit payment schedules apply to individuals who file new unemployment insurance claims for the week beginning July 5, 2020, and to workers injured on or after July 1, 2020. Individuals currently receiving benefits from state or federal programs will continue to receive the same weekly benefit amount. An increase in the amount of wages covered by unemployment insurance triggered the rise in benefits. The average annual wage for insured Iowa workers increased to $48,455.86 in 2019, up from $47,290.57 in 2018. Under Iowa law, the number of people covered by unemployment insurance and their gross wages are primary elements of a formula Iowa Workforce Development uses each year to compute maximum and minimum benefit amounts paid to jobless workers. The new rates are: .
Iowa Workforce Development officials noted that about half of those eligible for unemployment insurance benefits have enough earnings to qualify for the maximum benefit. The 2021 taxable wage base will be $32,400. Beginning July 1, the workers’ compensation maximum weekly benefit for temporary total disability, healing period, permanent total disability and death will rise to $1,864. For permanent partial disability, the weekly maximum will be $1,715. LIHEAP Application Deadline June 30, 2020 If you are having trouble paying your home energy bill or facing disconnection, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is accepting applications through June 30, 2020, at your local community action agency. Many agencies offer other assistance such as food banks, food delivery initiatives, clothing, diapers, and addressing other emergency needs. Governor Reynolds issues disaster proclamation for Black Hawk County Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for Black Hawk County in response to a severe storm June 20. The governor's proclamation allows state resources to be utilized to respond to and recover from the effects of this severe weather and activates the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program for qualifying residents, along with the Disaster Case Management Program, for Black Hawk County. The Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program provides grants of up to $5,000 for households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level or a maximum annual income of $43,440 for a family of three. Grants are available for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and temporary housing expenses. Original receipts are required for those seeking reimbursement for actual expenses related to storm recovery. The grant application and instructions are available on the Iowa Department of Human Services website. Potential applicants have 45 days from the date of the proclamation to submit a claim. Paycheck Protection Program accepting applications until June 30, 2020 The Small Business Administration is assisting small businesses and non-profits with access to the federal forgivable loan program, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which is currently accepting applications until June 30, 2020. More than $129 billion remains to be loaned in the PPP fund. The new rule updates provisions relating to loan maturity, deferral of loan payments, and forgiveness provisions and expands eligibility for businesses with owners who have past felony convictions. Tax Deadlines and Free Tax Preparation The extended deadline to file and pay 2019 federal income taxes is July 15, 2020. Iowa tax returns are due July 31, 2020. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) provides free tax preparation to low-to-moderate income families and individuals. IRS-trained volunteer tax preparers assist clients to complete their tax returns and file them electronically for fast refunds.
Low Income Taxpayer Clinics Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITC) assist low income individuals who have a tax dispute with the IRS, and provide education and outreach to individuals who are English Language Learners. Stimulus Payment Request Deadline for Non-Filers- October 15 The IRS reminds Americans who don't earn enough to have a tax filing requirement to sign up online with the IRS to request an Economic Impact Payment. If you're a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or "qualifying resident alien", you may be eligible for an Economic Impact Payment. Even if you don't normally file taxes or are experiencing homelessness, you may still qualify for a payment. You may also get an additional $500 for each qualifying child. To get this $1,200 payment, sign up at IRS.gov by October 15, 2020. No income is required and registering won't result in you owing taxes. For eligibility requirements, required documents, and more information, visit https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here (website available in multiple languages). For the millions of older adults who struggle to meet their monthly expenses, COVID-19 associated illness, loss of income, or increased expenses is causing severe financial strain. This webcast will provide an overview of what financial relief is available for those harmed financially by COVID-19, with a particular focus on mortgage relief options. This webcast will also highlight strategies for legal helplines and phone-based service models to identify and provide legal information and referrals on mortgage relief issues. Win for All: Mask Donations for Iowans Broadlawns Medical Center and United Way of Central Iowa are calling on community members to donate cloth face masks to help provide free access to this important protection by making or purchasing fabric face masks to donate to Win for All. Help for Child Care Providers The Iowa Department of Human Services recently announced that it has disbursed nearly $5.86 million in relief stipends and grants to licensed child care centers across the state as part of its COVID-19 Childcare Sustainability Plan. The funding is part of nearly $31.9 million that Iowa DHS received from the federal CARES Act to help licensed centers and registered homes to remain open or, if temporarily closed, reopen through a variety of funding strategies. More than 1,800 child care programs received basic monthly stipends of $2,000 for licensed centers or $500 for licensed homes in April and May, and more than 1,000 programs received funds to assist in adding employees. Providers that wish to receive the monthly stipend must complete a monthly stipend survey. For more information about the programs, click here. The Small Business Administration’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans and Advance Program Reopens to All Eligible Small Businesses and Non-Profits To further meet the needs of U.S. small businesses and non-profits, the U.S. Small Business Administration reopened the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) and EIDL Advance program portal to all eligible applicants experiencing economic impacts due to COVID-19. With the reopening of the EIDL assistance and EIDL Advance application portal to all new applicants, additional small businesses and non-profits will be able to receive these long-term, low interest loans and emergency grants. EIDL assistance can be used to cover payroll and inventory, pay debt or fund other expenses. Additionally, the EIDL Advance will provide up to $10,000 ($1,000 per employee) of emergency economic relief to businesses that are currently experiencing temporary difficulties, and these emergency grants do not have to be repaid. According to the Iowa Department of Human Rights, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas, with news that slaves were free and the war had ended. The African American Museum of Iowa, the Iowa Juneteenth Observance organization, and others across the state are hosting events to observe Juneteenth.
