INFORMATION: Have you ever thought about keeping bees? Fairfield Public Library will sponsor an introductory course on the subject in February. Sean Johnson and Charlie Newton will co-teach. Sean says, "This is designed to prepare you for hands-on management of your own hive this year. We'll talk about startup costs, physical requirements, procurement of equipment and bees, installing your first package of bees, managing the colony throughout the year, and harvesting honey from the hive." Sean has kept bees for six years in Fairfield and northwest Iowa. Charlie is a familiar face at Fairfield Farmers' Market as the proprietor of Newton's Own Honey. He has kept bees for more than 15 years and manages hives for others. In response to requests from Farmers' Market customers, they aim to encourage hobbyists who want to learn this dying art. A total of 16 hours of free instruction will be spread over four sessions: February 6, 7, 13, and 14 from 1:00-5:00pm in the library's indoor conference room. Sean and Charlie will email free handouts to those who pre-register at the library's front desk. Registrants have the option of printing handouts at ten cents per page on the library's public equipment. Please bring your handouts, pen, and paper to class. Beverages with tight-fitting lids are permitted. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis and class size is limited to 12. The course is free. Please stop by the library's front desk to pre-register and leave a refundable deposit. (In the event of cancellation, 24 hours' notice is required for a deposit refund.) For information call the library at 472-6551.
