Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk (6:30PM)
INFORMATION:
What: Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk - Celebrates Harvest
When: Friday, September 3, 2010
Time: 6:30 - 9:00 pm
Where: Downtown Fairfield
September Art Walk
will be a celebration of harvest and all the food and bounty that goes with
it. Partnering with Art Walk is the County Farm Bureau who will be
sponsoring a booth on the southeast corner of the Square displaying the
photography skills of Iowa Farm Bureau photographer Joe Murphy, a Kid's Pedal
Pull, Free Pork Loin Sandwiches, and a display of farm equipment. Farmers from
Jefferson, Van Buren and Wapello County will be on hand to answer questions
about their farms. "It's a great way for us to promote and put a face on
the industry we love," said Jeremy Atwood, Jefferson County President.
"As Americans become more removed from the farm it's important to explain how
passionate and responsible we are to the land and our animals."
Next to the Farm Bureau, on the Southwest corner of the park will be members of
Fairfield's Farmer Market and some special new contests. "Get your
throwing arm ready" advises Betsy Howland, Art Walk coordinator. "1st Fridays
Art Walk is having its very 1st horseshoe contest and Cow Chip toss contest."
Ribbons will be award to the winners in both contests and the public is invited
to come to the south side of the Square and give it a try or simply cheer their
favorite team to victory. The South side will also host the Girl Scout's
Dunk tank, featuring another great line up of "dunkees".
The Northeast quadrant of the Square will feature hay rides and the kid's
corner. The Hay rides, compliments of Radiance Dairy, will operate from 6:30 to
9:00 pm. The kid's corner will feature pony rides for children from 5:30 to
9:00 pm. A petting zoo with baby farm animals along with Noah's Ark's &
their furry little friends will also be highlighted in this quadrant. The
Kids corner's favorite crafty lady Patti Soderburg, will be there to help the
kids with a take-home corn project.
There is an abundance of Musical entertainment this month. Starting at
5:30 at the Gazebo will be the country tunes of Stanley Knipfer and Friends,
followed by the Steamboat Kings from Minneapolis. The Steamboat Kings are a Folky
Alternative band comprised of students from the McNallySmith College of music
who started making music in 2009. They are currently working on a full length
album and their shows are vibrant and energetic, making a fun, danceable
entertaining sound. Also look for the Fiddlin' Granny who will be
making her way around the Square with her peppy fiddle tunes.
The Harvestfest would
not be complete without the Food Court, exhibiting artists and crafters on the
Northwest quadrant from 6pm to 9:30 pm. Look for the shops and galleries to be
open all night.

Women's Networking Luncheon (12:00PM)
INFORMATION:
What: Women's Networking Luncheon
Speaker: Sharon Bousquet of Bousquet Music
When: Wednesday, September 15, 2010
Time: 12-1 pm
Where: Fairfield Golf & Country Club
-
Presentation: Know Your Voice
and Enhance Your Life
-
Bousquet
will explore some of the ways that speaking, singing and other modes of
self-expression color your experience of the world. Whether talking with
loved ones, giving a business presentation or singing in the shower, your voice
is one of the most intimate ways to express the way you feel, what you think;
your core beliefs and understanding of the world. The way we communicate with
our voices - the tone, volume, intensity and underlying emotion - give much
more information about our true feelings than the actual words we choose.
Consequently, by exploring your natural sound and becoming aware of
outside influences that have affected your willingness to be heard, you bring
the power of conscious change to unconscious - and often limiting - choices and
beliefs.

Comedian Greg Hahn Comes To The Sondheim Center (7:30PM)
INFORMATION:
What: Comedian Greg Hahn
When: Friday, September 24
Time: 7:30 pm
Where: Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts
The Fairfield Arts and Convention Center welcomes comedian Greg
Hahn to the Sondheim Theater, Friday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. Hahn is a
regular on the nationally
syndicated Bob and Tom radio show and has appeared on Late Night with Conan
O'Brien, MTV, ABC, CBS, CMT and Comedy Central.
Greg Hahn has parlayed
his absurdly energetic, all out style of physical humor, one liners and crowd
work, into an act with no waiting for the funny, just immediate pandemonium and
panic. His massive likeable and wild stylings have led to numerous television,
club, and theater appearances throughout the country.
Hahn is best known for his
performances on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show where
his aggressive comedic style with numerous punch lines, along with his drumming
ability, have earned him consistent appearances. He performed in the first Bob
and Tom Comedy Central special and headlines many of their theater shows
across the country. Hahn
is considered one of the best stand-up comedians and brings a physical brand of
comedy that has made him a favorite in clubs, colleges and corporate shows.
"Greg Hahn is the hottest and biggest name in the national comedy scene," said
Rustin Lippincott, Fairfield Arts and Convention Center. "This is one of those
comedy shows that you can't miss as it will be a night of a highly energetic
style of humor, I can't believe we are getting him at the Sondheim Center."
Opening the evening of comedy in the
Theater will be Chris Schlicting. Growing up on the
mean streets of Iowa, Schlichting knew that he either had to take up stand-up
comedy or join the notorious Midwest gang known as "The Farmers."
Described as
"hilarious" by his mom and as "not having a real job" by
his dad, Chris takes pride in his immature, yet sincere stand-up style.
This unique comic is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the best
comics on the planet, and by "planet" we mean "his street."
With the confidence of a
lion, the agility of a puma, and the intelligence of a really smart house cat,
Chris is sure to leave you laughing, and wanting more.
Tickets for
Greg Hahn at Fairfield's Sondheim Center on Friday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m.
are $15 and available at the Center's Ticket Office, 641-472-2787 and online at

When: Saturday, September 25, 2010
Matt Hoover won the 2nd season of "The Biggest
Loser", a reality show on NBC featuring contestants attempting dramatic
weight loss. A former 2 time Iowa state high-school wrestling champ,
Hoover fell short of his goals as a collegiate wrestler due to an injury.
Afterwards he developed severe eating and drinking disorders and his weight
soon ballooned to 340 lbs. After auditioning and subsequently winning the
show, Hoover married his co-contestant, Suzy Preston, who placed 3rd and are
raising a family in Washington State.
Hoover, who will also be
speaking at the Southeast Iowa Wellness Expo, has developed a passion for the
sport of triathlon and is excited to come to Fairfield to participate in the
Southeast Iowa Triathlon (SEI-Tri)
"This Triathlon event is
a great companion to the Wellness Expo happening on the same day," said Terry
Baker, Assistant Director of the Fairfield Convention and Visitors
Bureau. "It's sure to add a sense of fun and community to our wellness
event."
The Southeast Iowa
Triathlon sprint (SEI Tri) is a shorter-distance triathlon covering only a
small portion of the traditional Ironman and Olympic distance lengths. Sprints
are ideal for the beginning tri-athlete or shorter-distance specialist. Local athletes are
encouraged to participate in the triathlon along side of Matt.
Registration is open to anyone 14 years or older capable of safely completing a
triathlon of equal or greater distance in the allotted time. If the registrant
is under 18 years of age, parental permission is required. Individual and
team applications are being accepted.
The swim portion of the
event will take place at Waterworks Park with participants swimming the lake
out and back for a total of ¼ mile. The 6.2 mile bike portion will occur
on hard surface roads and the 1.5 mile run will conclude in front of the
Convention Center where the Southeast Iowa Wellness Expo will be under
way. Co-coordinator Roeland Hekker emphasized that an official chip
timing system will be used and results of the race will be posted at the
Convention Center within minutes of each racer's completion. An awards
ceremony will be held at 11 am at the Convention Center, with Matt Hoover
assisting in the award presentation. Overall awards are given to the Top Three male and female
finishers with additional awards being given to the Top Three finishers in each
age group.
